This compendium is not about whether a machine can feel. It asks what emotional intelligence is for in the consulting room, what it means that a system can now reproduce its surface without its origin, and what happens to us when the comparison enters the room as an atmosphere rather than a statement. There are no protocols here, only distinctions, clinical detail and a working grid for observation.

Abstract

Read the abstract

When patients bring the output of a language model into the room, a comparison enters with it, in which the machine is cast as the logical one and the therapist as the one who feels. This compendium argues that the formulation is false in both directions and examines what emotional intelligence is for in clinical work. It distinguishes the capacity to be affected from the capacity to process, traces the developmental origins of the clinician's emotional intelligence, and asks what it means that a system can reproduce its surface without its history. It then describes how this appears in session, including therapies that become calmer without becoming deeper, offers a differential reading of five configurations that look alike, and addresses the clinician's own use of these tools in notes and formulation. It closes with composite vignettes, common errors and an observation grid.

Who it's for

Therapists who have felt compared with a chatbot, or have noticed sessions becoming calmer without becoming deeper, and supervisors who want a vocabulary for talking about it.
