This is a discipline for organizing your own attention rather than an instrument, so it has no validation, no scoring and no diagnostic status, and it is never something to hand to a patient. Eight sections follow the practice from how it began to its function, its relation to the frame and its effect on the material and on us, and they close with questions about our own use of the same tools. A section that stays empty for months is information too.

Abstract

Read the abstract

Clinicians in longer-term work increasingly need somewhere to keep track of how a patient uses AI tools between sessions. This instrument offers an eight-part observation grid for that purpose: how the practice was established, the function it serves, its relation to the frame, its effect on the material brought to session, the relational configuration with the tool, risk, a countertransference log and the clinician's own use of the same tools. It is explicitly not a validated instrument and has no scoring or diagnostic status; it is a discipline for organizing the clinician's attention across months and is not meant to be shown to or administered to a patient. The grid also treats absence as data, since a section that stays empty over time indicates either that a question does not apply or that it has been avoided.

Who it's for

Clinicians in longer-term work with clients who use chatbots or companion apps, who want a structured place to keep observations across sessions.
