The Distance Map asks for that picture three times (as it is, as it was five years ago, as they would want it) and the clinical material lives in the gaps between the three. A page of clinician notes tracks the order of placement, the hesitations, and where you appear on the map, if you appear at all.

The Distance Map is an original relational mapping instrument built on that observation. The patient places the people in their life around themselves three times, as things are now, as they were five years ago and as the patient would want them to be. Clinical material is drawn mainly from the differences between the three maps: who moved, what would have to change for the third map to become the first and who is missing from the page. A page of clinician notes records order of placement, hesitations, corrections and whether the therapist appears on the map. The instrument has no scoring and is intended as a structured prompt for exploration within the session.
